Lightning protection system design, storm detection modeling, equipment supply, installation, and commissioning for a terminal tank farm.

The Challenge

The tank farm required a reliable lightning protection system capable of protecting its infrastructure and associated equipment from the risks associated with lightning strikes and electrical surges.

Given the nature of a tank farm environment, the protection system also needed to incorporate equipment suitable for hazardous-area applications and provide a means of monitoring lightning activity.

Our Approach

We began with detailed engineering of the lightning protection system, including storm detection modeling to establish an appropriate protection strategy for the facility.

The approach combined specialised lightning protection equipment with a properly installed network of conductors and accessories. Equipment selection considered the requirements of the terminal environment, including the use of ATEX-certified Early Streamer Emission (ESE) rods.

The Solution

We delivered a complete lightning protection solution covering design, equipment supply, installation, and commissioning.

The system incorporated:

  • ATEX ESE lightning rods for lightning interception and protection
  • Lightning counters for recording lightning events
  • Remote monitoring units for monitoring system activity
  • Lightning conductors and associated accessories for safely managing and directing lightning current

Following installation, the complete system was commissioned to verify the functionality of the installed protection infrastructure.

The Impact

The completed project provided the ASCON-SETANA JV terminal with an integrated lightning protection and monitoring system designed to protect the tank farm infrastructure against lightning-related risks.

The combination of specialised protection equipment, lightning event monitoring, and a properly installed conductor network provided the facility with a more comprehensive approach to lightning risk management and infrastructure protection.
