Remote monitoring and telemetry integration for smart Ring Main Units (RMUs), including network infrastructure, fiber optic communication, and PLC/HMI upgrades.

The Challenge

The Lekki facility required improved remote visibility and monitoring of its critical power distribution equipment. With seven smart RMUs forming part of the electrical infrastructure, the project required a reliable communication system capable of transmitting equipment data to the relevant monitoring and control environment.

The existing control architecture also needed to accommodate the new equipment, requiring updates to the PLC logic and HMI interfaces.

Our Approach

We developed an integration and telemetry approach for the seven smart RMUs, focusing on both the physical communication network and the control-system interface.

The approach included establishing a fibre-optic communication infrastructure using media converters and network switches, followed by modifications to the PLC logic and HMI screens to ensure compatibility with the upgraded equipment.

The Solution

We are implementing a remote monitoring and telemetry system for seven smart Ring Main Units (RMUs).

The scope includes:

  • Integration and telemetry design for 7 smart RMUs
  • Installation of fiber optic cables for high-speed communication
  • Installation of media converters to interface different communication media
  • Installation and configuration of network switches
  • Updating PLC logic to support the new equipment
  • Updating HMI screens for equipment monitoring and compatibility

The combined infrastructure is designed to connect the smart RMUs with the facility’s wider monitoring and control environment.

The Impact

The ongoing project is establishing a more connected critical power monitoring infrastructure for the Lekki facility.

Once completed, the integration will provide a structured communication pathway for the seven smart RMUs, while the updated PLC and HMI systems will support equipment visibility, monitoring, and interaction from the control environment.
